Benue Community Attacked; Multiple Killed As Governor Condemns Violence

Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has strongly condemned the violent attack on Abande community in Turan, Kwande Local Government Area, calling for the immediate arrest of the perpetrators. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, claimed several lives, including a gallant police officer, and left homes destroyed.

In a statement issued Wednesday by his Chief Press Secretary, Kula Terso, Governor Alia described the attack as “an assault on our shared humanity and an affront to the peace and security of Benue State.” He extended his deepest condolences to the families of the victims and the entire Abande community.

“My heart goes out to the peaceful people of Abande. This cowardly act of terror must be addressed decisively,” the statement read. Governor Alia assured residents that security agencies had been directed to intensify operations, pursue the attackers with full force, and restore safety to affected communities. He emphasized ongoing collaboration with federal security authorities and local intelligence networks to ensure justice and prevent future attacks.

Eyewitnesses said the assailants, described as Fulani terrorists, stormed the community on market day, looting stalls and setting shops ablaze. While casualty reports vary, a former councillor, Akerigbe Lawrence, said about 17 people were killed, including a mobile police officer. The chairman of the local traditional council, Ter Kwande, HRM Timothy Ayile, confirmed six residents and a police officer had died, while the State Police Command reported five fatalities, including a police officer.

The attack exposed vulnerabilities in local security, as the remaining three policemen stationed at Abande reportedly fled, leaving the community exposed. The traditional ruler urged the federal government to establish a permanent military unit in the area to prevent further violence.

Governor Alia encouraged residents to remain hopeful, united, and resilient in the face of such tragedies, reaffirming the state government’s commitment to protect lives and property.

The incident underscores the ongoing security challenges facing border communities in Benue State and highlights the urgent need for strengthened local and federal interventions.
