EFCC Suspends Top Prosecutor Over Alleged Bribery, Sabotage Of Cases

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has suspended senior prosecutor Samuel Chime over allegations that he accepted bribes and sabotaged high-profile corruption cases, raising concerns about the integrity of Nigeria’s anti-graft efforts.

The suspension, announced Sunday, February 8, 2026, follows multiple complaints that Chime compromised ongoing cases through improper conduct and financial inducements.

An internal panel has been established to investigate the allegations and assess whether his prosecutions were undermined.

Chime, who handled several major corruption and financial crime prosecutions, is alleged to have received illicit payments to weaken cases, shield suspects, and delay court proceedings.

Preliminary reports suggest at least two high-profile matters he managed may have been affected.
Several of Chime’s ongoing cases have been reassigned to other legal officers to safeguard prosecutions while the investigation continues.

Legal experts warn that confirmed misconduct could have far-reaching implications for ongoing trials and public confidence in the EFCC.

EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede said the panel will review Chime’s actions and recommend sanctions, which could include dismissal or criminal prosecution, assuring that all affected cases will be audited and reassigned as necessary.

The suspension has renewed calls for stronger oversight and ethics compliance within the EFCC’s prosecution arm.

Civil society organisations welcomed the action but urged a swift and transparent investigation.

The probe highlights persistent challenges in maintaining public trust in Nigeria’s anti-corruption institutions, even as the EFCC continues to prosecute prominent public officials.
