Shehu Sani Backs December Airstrikes, Defends Senator Remi Amid Criticism

Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has thrown his weight behind the Nigerian Air Force’s December airstrikes against bandits and terrorists in northern Nigeria, describing the operation as a “welcome development” in the fight against insecurity.

In a post shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday, Sani called for sustained military action against armed groups responsible for mass killings, sexual violence, and kidnappings across several northern states.

“The December air strikes against bandits and terrorists in the North was a welcome development. More strikes by our Air Force are needed against those mass murderers, rapists and kidnappers,” he wrote.

Sani also defended comments reportedly made by Senator Oluremi Tinubu on the matter, insisting that her position was justified given the scale and brutality of atrocities committed by armed groups.

“What Senator Remi said is right. I don’t know why some people are attacking her in view of the heinous atrocities of those terrorists,” he added.

His remarks come amid public debate over the conduct and consequences of aerial military operations, with critics raising concerns about civilian safety while others argue that decisive force is necessary to stem worsening insecurity.

Supporters of intensified air operations contend that armed groups have continued to operate with impunity, terrorising communities through coordinated attacks, abductions, and destruction of livelihoods.

Sani’s intervention adds to growing calls from political figures and security advocates for a tougher, sustained military response to restore safety and stability in affected regions.
