Ikeja Electric Clarifies Tax Data Update Applies Corporate Customers

Ikeja Electric Plc has clarified that its recent directive for updating customer information, linked to the Nigeria Tax Act 2025, applies exclusively to corporate clients, vendors, and strategic business partners.

The electricity distribution company had previously alerted customers that bills lacking valid identification details would be considered invalid under the Nigeria Tax Act (2025). Acceptable identification includes a Tax Identification Number (TIN), Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) registration number, or National Identification Number (NIN). Failure to provide these details could affect billing and continuity of services.

In a public notice issued on Thursday, the 12th of February, 2026, Ikeja Electric explained that the initiative is aimed at aligning with the new tax regulations while reinforcing internal risk management and compliance measures.

The Nigeria Tax Act (2025), effective January 1, mandates that all invoices, including utility bills, carry valid customer identification. Bills without the required information are deemed invalid under the law.

Ikeja Electric stated that the update supports its compliance obligations and strengthens its Know Your Customer (KYC) and Know Your Business Customer (KYCB) procedures, which are critical for verifying and managing corporate client information.

The company emphasised in the notice: “The notice applies strictly to corporate customers (B2B), as well as our vendors and strategic business partners. This initiative is driven by compliance requirements under the Nigeria Tax Act (NTA) 2025 and related regulations, and also supports our internal KYC/KYCB risk management processes. Under the NTA 2025, supplier invoices (including those issued by Ikeja Electric) are required to carry prescribed details, including Ikeja Electric’s Tax ID and CAC Registration Number.”

Ikeja Electric further explained that the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) implementation framework mandates supplier invoices to be uploaded and validated on the NRS portal, making the corporate customer’s Tax ID a compulsory field for processing and verification.

“In addition, the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) implementation framework requires that invoices be uploaded and validated on the NRS portal. Where such validated invoices are transmitted to corporate customers through the portal, the customer’s Tax ID becomes a mandatory field for processing and verification,” the notice stated.

The company assured corporate clients of a smooth transition with no interruptions to power supply. “We assure all affected customers that the data update and validation process will be seamless, and there will be no disruption to service,” the statement read.

Finally, Ikeja Electric reiterated that the requirement is exclusive to corporate clients and urged them to submit the requested information via the link provided in the public notice.
