Atiku Visits El-Rufai After Arrest Attempt At Abuja Airport

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Friday disclosed that he paid a solidarity visit to former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, following what he described as a failed attempt by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to arrest him at an airport upon his return to Nigeria.

Atiku made the disclosure via his official X (formerly Twitter) account, stating that the visit took place on Thursday night.

“Last night, I paid a solidarity visit to the former Governor of Kaduna State and stalwart of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, following the failed attempt by the partisan ICPC to arrest him at the airport upon his arrival in the country,” he wrote.

While details surrounding the alleged arrest attempt were not immediately available, Atiku described the anti-corruption agency as “partisan” in his post — a remark likely to intensify political debate.

El-Rufai, a prominent political figure and key member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has remained active in national political discourse since leaving office as governor of Kaduna State.

As of press time, the ICPC had not issued an official statement confirming or denying the alleged attempt to arrest the former governor.

The development adds a new dimension to the evolving political landscape, particularly amid growing realignments and tensions ahead of the 2027 general elections. Political observers say reactions from relevant authorities in the coming days may clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident.
