Respect Forged Our Bond: Charly Boy Opens Up On Friendship With Obasanjo

Veteran singer and activist Charles Oputa, has described his relationship with former President Olusegun Obasanjo as a rare connection built on mutual respect and honest dialogue.

In a post shared on X on Monday, Charly Boy said many Nigerians were initially surprised by his closeness to the former leader due to his long-standing reputation for challenging authority.

“When you mention the kind of relationship that is not common in this country, you will talk about Charly Boy and Olusegun Obasanjo. Many people did not understand it at first — how a rebel who always challenges government could be close to a former president. But life is not black and white. Sometimes respect and understanding build bridges where people do not expect,” he said.

Charly Boy noted that Obasanjo recognized qualities in him often overlooked by others, including courage, consistency, and a willingness to stand by his truth regardless of circumstances. In return, he said he looked beyond the former president’s military and political background to see an elder shaped by war, leadership pressures, and national trials.

“Baba Obasanjo saw something in Charly Boy that many people missed. He saw courage, consistency, and a man who stands for his truth. And Charly Boy also saw beyond uniform and title — he saw an elder who has passed through war, leadership pressure, and still stands strong,” he said.

He described their relationship as one defined by thoughtful conversations rather than public spectacle, noting that discussions about Nigeria’s challenges may involve disagreements but never bitterness.

“Their relationship is not a noisy one. It is a quiet understanding. When they talk, it is two strong minds reasoning about Nigeria. They may argue, they may disagree, but respect remains intact,” Charly Boy said.

He added that the depth of their regard was evident when Obasanjo personally hosted the launch of his autobiography, 999, which he described as a major milestone in his career.

“That respect was clear when Baba Obasanjo personally hosted the biggest moment of my career, the launch of my life story book 999. That event was not just about selling a book; it was an honour, an acknowledgement — an elder telling a younger warrior, ‘I see you.’ It proved that bonds are not always about agreeing on everything; sometimes it is about recognizing value in each other,” Charly Boy said.

He concluded that their bond sends a message in a country often marked by division, showing that dialogue, respect, and unity remain possible even among strong-willed individuals with differing views.

“The fondness between them is real. You can see it in the way they speak about each other, with warmth and genuine regard. In a country with too much division, their connection shows that dialogue, respect, and unity are possible, and that mutual respect over ego is a powerful example,” he said.
