President Bola Tinubu has ordered a leadership transition at the Nigeria Police Force, directing Inspector-General Kayode Egbetokun to step down and approving Tunji Disu as his successor.
Sources familiar with the development said the decision followed consultations at the Presidential Villa on Monday, February 23, 2026, during which Mr Egbetokun was asked to tender his resignation.
An official announcement is expected soon, and Senate confirmation of Mr Disu’s appointment is anticipated given his extensive experience within the police hierarchy.
Mr Egbetokun has faced criticism in recent months over questions regarding his continued tenure beyond the statutory retirement age and concerns raised by political and civic groups about police performance under his leadership.
Activist Omoyele Sowore and others previously argued that the controversy undermined public confidence in law enforcement.

The presidency has also faced pressure to broaden representation in top appointments and strengthen security governance, factors sources say influenced the leadership change.
Mr Disu currently oversees the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex in Alagbon, Lagos, and previously served as Commissioner of Police in the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State commands.
He has led specialised operational units including the Intelligence Response Team and Rapid Response Squad.
A graduate of Lagos State University with qualifications in English Education and International Relations and Strategic Studies, Mr Disu holds advanced degrees in public administration and criminology, security, and legal psychology.
He is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police and began his career in 1992 after training at the Nigeria Police Academy in Wudil, Kano State.
