Jonathan Receives Newly Sworn Bayelsa Deputy Governor

Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan on Saturday received the newly appointed Deputy Governor of Bayelsa, Peter Akpe, at his residence in Yenagoa.

The visit followed Akpe’s recent appointment and assumption of office, succeeding the late former Deputy Governor, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, who passed away on Thursday, December 11, 2025.

In a statement shared on his official X account, Jonathan said, “This morning, I had the pleasure of receiving the new Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, His Excellency, Pastor Peter Akpe, PhD, at my residence in Yenagoa.” He described the visit as a courtesy call and wished Akpe success in serving the people of the state.

Akpe, whose nomination was cleared by the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, is the sixth Deputy Governor of the state and will complete the remaining two years of the current administration.

His swearing-in ceremony took place on Wednesday at the Bayelsa State Executive Council chamber in Yenagoa, alongside the inauguration of four commissioners and 14 permanent secretaries.

Governor Douye Diri prayed for the repose of the late Deputy Governor and highlighted the solemn responsibilities of the office. He explained that after prayerful consideration, he forwarded Akpe’s name to the State House of Assembly, which approved the nomination promptly in accordance with the amended Constitution of Nigeria.

“If you look at our dressing today, it is divinely instructive. We never planned to wear a similar outfit today. After nominating him for this high assignment, the Assembly considered his nomination with the speed of light, and today we witness the swearing-in as required by the constitution,” Diri said.
