The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared that he owes no one an apology for supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, insisting that his political decisions are guided by conviction rather than party pressure.
Speaking during a media chat in Abuja on Monday, the former Governor of Rivers State addressed criticisms surrounding his role in the recent FCT council elections and his open backing of candidates aligned with the President.
“I owe no apologies to anyone for working for President Tinubu,” Wike said firmly.
He revealed that as a minister, he was not consulted by his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on the selection of candidates presented for the FCT elections.
According to him, the only aspirants who formally informed him of their intention to run were those who publicly supported President Tinubu’s re-election bid.
“As a minister, my party never consulted me on the candidates they were presenting at the FCT elections.

The only candidates who told me they were running were those supporting the president, and I supported only those backing President Tinubu’s reelection,” he stated.
Wike further described contesting elections under the PDP as a significant risk, citing what he termed leadership uncertainty within the party.
His remarks are likely to deepen existing tensions within the opposition party, where his alignment with the ruling administration has remained a subject of controversy.
The minister’s comments reflect the ongoing political realignments and internal divisions shaping Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of future electoral contests.
Observers say his stance underscores the complexities of party loyalty and governance in a period marked by shifting alliances and strategic calculations.
