Drone Strike Hits Saudi Arabia’s Ras Tanura Refinery, Forces Shutdown

A drone attack linked to Iran struck the Ras Tanura Refinery on Monday, March 2, 2026, forcing a temporary suspension of operations at the major energy facility.

Saudi defence officials reported that air defences intercepted two drones approaching the site, but debris from the interception triggered a limited fire within the complex.

The refinery, operated by Saudi Aramco, processes approximately 550,000 barrels of crude daily and serves as a key component of Saudi Arabia’s energy export infrastructure.

Authorities stated that emergency teams quickly contained the blaze and confirmed there were no casualties or significant environmental damage.

Officials said operations were halted as a precaution while safety assessments and repairs were conducted.

Saudi defense sources indicated that an investigation was underway to determine the origin of the drones and any parties responsible for the attack.

Oil markets reacted with a brief price increase before stabilizing as the company assured customers that supply obligations remained intact.

Analysts noted that the incident underscored ongoing risks to critical infrastructure amid regional tensions.

The event forms part of a broader pattern of attacks and military exchanges in the Middle East, raising concerns about potential disruptions to global energy security if such incidents continue.

Saudi Aramco has not announced a timeline for the full resumption of operations at the refinery.
