Tinubu Nominates Taiwo Oyedele As Finance Minister

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated fiscal policy expert Taiwo Oyedele as Minister of State for Finance, signalling a renewed push to consolidate ongoing tax and fiscal reforms within his administration.

The nomination, conveyed to the Senate on Tuesday in a letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, will require legislative confirmation before it takes effect.

Oyedele is set to replace Doris Uzoka-Anite, who has been redeployed to the Ministry of Budget and National Planning as Minister of State — her third ministerial portfolio under the Tinubu administration.

Until his nomination, Oyedele chaired the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, a body credited with spearheading a sweeping overhaul of Nigeria’s tax framework aimed at boosting revenue generation and simplifying compliance.

His appointment is widely seen as a move to sustain the momentum of those reforms within the Finance Ministry.

Born in Ikaram, Akoko, Ondo State, the 50-year-old economist and accountant brings more than two decades of private-sector experience to the role.

He spent 22 years at PwC, where he rose to become Fiscal Policy Partner and Africa Tax Leader, positioning himself as one of the country’s most prominent voices on tax policy and public finance.

His academic background reflects a blend of local and international training.

Oyedele earned a Higher National Diploma in Accountancy and Finance from Yaba College of Technology before obtaining a BSc in Applied Accounting from Oxford Brookes University.

He has also completed executive education programmes at the London School of Economics, Yale University, the Gordon Institute of Business Science, and the Harvard Kennedy School.

Beyond corporate and policy circles, Oyedele is an academic, serving as a professor at Babcock University in Ogun State and a visiting scholar at the Lagos Business School.

The nomination comes at a critical time for Nigeria’s economy, as the government seeks to strengthen fiscal stability, expand the tax base, and navigate revenue challenges.

Observers say Oyedele’s deep expertise in tax reform and fiscal policy could play a pivotal role in shaping the administration’s next phase of economic strategy.

The Senate is expected to consider the nomination in the coming days.
