Euracare Defends Doctors Amid Suspension Over Toddler’s Death

Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital has defended its clinical staff following the interim suspension of its Medical Director, Dr Tunde Majekodunmi, and two other physicians over the death of 21-month-old Nkanu Nnamdi Esege, one of the twin sons of acclaimed Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her husband, Ivara Esege.

In a statement reported by ARISE News on Wednesday, the hospital reaffirmed its confidence in the professionalism and integrity of its suspended doctors while pledging full cooperation with regulatory authorities.

“Our attention has been drawn to widespread media reports concerning the interim suspension orders and other findings issued by the Medical and Dental Practitioners Investigation Panel against thirteen doctors, two of whom are our clinical staff members,” the hospital said.

The Medical and Dental Practitioners Investigation Panel, set up by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, suspended Dr Majekodunmi, Dr Titus Ogundare, and Dr Atinuke Uwajeh, Chief Medical Officer at Atlantis Pediatric Hospital, after determining that medical negligence contributed to the toddler’s death on January 7, 2026.

The suspended doctors are barred from practising medicine in Nigeria pending a final determination by the Medical and Dental Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal.

Euracare, however, strongly defended its team.

“We wish to place on record our confidence in the professionalism and integrity of our clinical team. Dr Tosin Majekodunmi and Dr Titus Ogundare are experienced professionals whose records of service to patients in Nigeria span many years,” the hospital stated.

It added that both doctors had contributed meaningfully to healthcare delivery at standards comparable to leading global facilities and disclosed that it had conducted a thorough internal review of the clinical events in line with established governance practices.

While expressing empathy for the bereaved family, Euracare also raised concerns about what it described as procedural lapses during the investigation.

“It is our position that certain established processes and protocols have not been followed in the manner required,” the statement read.

The hospital further alleged breaches of confidentiality, noting that matters covered by patient and institutional privacy appeared to have been disclosed outside appropriate channels.

“We stand by the principles of equality, fairness, and good governance. Every party in this matter, including our institution and our staff, is entitled to a process that is conducted with rigour, impartiality, and respect for the rules that govern it,” Euracare added, indicating it would pursue its concerns through legal and regulatory avenues.

Beyond the legal and professional debate lies the profound human tragedy at the heart of the case. “We continue to empathise with the family of Master Nkanu Nnamdi Esege.

The loss of a child is a grief without measure,” the hospital said.

The panel reviewed complaints, counter-affidavits, and oral depositions under oath involving 21 doctors.

It found prima facie cases of professional misconduct against ten additional doctors, while clearing eight of wrongdoing.

As the case proceeds to the disciplinary tribunal, it is expected to attract sustained public attention — not only because of the prominence of the bereaved family, but also due to the broader implications for medical accountability and regulatory oversight in Nigeria’s healthcare system.
