The First Lady of Edo State, Anani Okpebholo, has called for increased investment in women empowerment and gender equality, describing both as critical drivers of national development and social progress.
Okpebholo made the call during an event held at the Edo State Government House in Benin City to commemorate International Women’s Day.
The event, themed “Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls,” brought together stakeholders, advocates and community leaders to reflect on the importance of advancing the rights and opportunities of women across society.
In a statement issued on Sunday, March 8, by the Public Relations Officer of the Office of the First Lady, Gloria Osemudiamhen, the First Lady emphasised the vital role women play in shaping the future of both the state and the country.
She commended women for their resilience, determination and commitment to excellence, noting that their contributions continue to drive socio-economic development in Nigeria.
“Women play a critical role in shaping the future of Edo State and Nigeria as a whole,” she said. “Their resilience, determination and unwavering commitment to excellence contribute immensely to the socio-economic development of the state and the nation.”
Okpebholo also stressed the importance of promoting justice and equality for women and girls, urging stakeholders to take decisive steps toward removing barriers that hinder their progress.

According to her, discriminatory laws, weak legal protections, harmful practices and restrictive social norms continue to undermine the rights and potential of women.
“There is a need to dismantle barriers to equal justice, including discriminatory laws, weak legal protections and harmful practices and social norms that undermine the rights of women and girls,” she stated.
The First Lady further reaffirmed the commitment of the Edo State government to creating opportunities that enhance economic independence, social inclusion and greater visibility for women across the state.
She noted that empowering women should be seen not only as a moral obligation but also as a strategic investment in national growth and sustainable development.
Calling for stronger collaboration among stakeholders, Okpebholo urged government institutions, civil society organisations and community leaders to support initiatives that advance gender equality.
She expressed optimism that collective action would help build a society where women can thrive, reach their full potential and contribute meaningfully to a more equitable and prosperous Nigeria.
