Makinde Would Have Defected From PDP If Seeking Re-Election — Otitoju

Babajide Kolade-Otitoju, Director of News at Television Continental (TVC), has said Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde might have defected from the Peoples Democratic Party if he were serving his first term in office and seeking re-election.

Otitoju made the remark on Friday, March 13, while speaking on TVC’s Breakfast Show, where he criticised the handling of internal issues within the PDP.

During the discussion, the veteran journalist questioned the decision of the party to proceed with its National Convention in Ibadan last November despite court warnings advising against it.

According to him, the move showed poor judgment at a critical moment for the party.

“People must show good judgment at a critical phase. What was the point of having that convention? Two courts told you not to go ahead but you went ahead,” Otitoju said.

He also referred to comments earlier made by former Senate President Bukola Saraki, who had suggested that the party should consider setting up a caretaker committee instead of proceeding with the convention.

Otitoju said Saraki’s position on the matter was reasonable.

“I may not be a fan of former Senate President Bukola Saraki but if he says something that makes sense, I will be the first to admit it. He made sense when he said let’s go for caretaker. What’s the point of not listening to him?” he said.

The TVC news director argued that the party had contributed to its own internal problems.

He added that the PDP should take responsibility for the crisis rather than blaming the ruling party.

“Later you will be shouting that the ruling party is behind your crisis, meanwhile you are the architect of your own misfortunes. You created this problem,” Otitoju said.

He further suggested that Governor Makinde’s political calculations might have been different if he were not already in his second term.

“If Makinde were in his first term, he would have fled like the dancing governor because his second term would have been in danger,” Otitoju said.
