Sallah Clampdown: Borno Bans Keke Movement, Urges Local Prayers

The Borno State Police Command has announced measures to ensure a smooth and secure Eid-el-Fitr celebration, including a temporary restriction on tricycle (Keke NAPEP) movement across the state. The directive will be in effect from 6 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Friday, March 20, 2026, as residents are urged to perform prayers at locations near their homes.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Daso, highlighted that operatives from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit have been deployed to strategic locations across the state. These personnel will conduct thorough screening of individuals and items entering major gathering points to prevent security threats.

The statement read, “The Borno State Police Command extends warm felicitations to the Muslim Ummah on the occasion of Eid-el-Fitr, marking the successful completion of the holy month of Ramadan. In furtherance of its constitutional mandate to protect lives and property, the command has emplaced a comprehensive security architecture to ensure a peaceful, safe, and hitch-free Eid celebration across the state.”

ASP Daso explained that the tricycle restriction aims to improve security coordination, ease crowd management, and mitigate potential risks. “Members of the public are enjoined to comply strictly,” he added, advising worshippers to attend Eid prayers at grounds closest to their residences to minimize movement and avoid overcrowding.

He further noted that, in collaboration with other security agencies, the police would deploy personnel to prayer grounds, markets, motor parks, and other vulnerable areas for crowd control, traffic management, and surveillance. “In addition, operatives of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit have been strategically positioned at major gathering points to conduct thorough screening of all persons and items entering designated venues, as part of proactive measures to forestall any untoward incidents,” Daso said.

The PRO emphasized that the Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, has directed Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and other personnel to intensify visibility patrols, intelligence-led operations, and security monitoring throughout the festive period while maintaining professionalism and respect for human rights.

Residents were urged to remain vigilant, celebrate responsibly, and report suspicious activities or objects promptly. Parents and guardians were also advised to monitor their children closely, particularly in crowded areas.

The command reassured the public of its dedication to maintaining law and order before, during, and after the festivities. The announcement comes after recent incidents in Maiduguri where suspected suicide bombers detonated explosives at the Post Office, the Monday Market axis, and the entrance of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.
