Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has raised fresh concerns over Nigeria’s worsening security situation, describing recent developments in parts of the country as a “complete breakdown of governance and humanity.”
In a statement posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday, Obi expressed alarm over reports from Borgaja and other communities in Sokoto State, where armed groups are allegedly issuing directives to residents, including forcing them to abandon their ancestral homes.
According to him, such incidents highlight a dangerous trend where non-state actors appear to be assuming the authority of the state, dictating the movement and safety of citizens without resistance.
“It is heartbreaking and unacceptable that terrorists can order Nigerians to flee their homes without consequence. This shows a collapse of governance,” Obi stated.
The former Anambra State governor questioned how the situation had deteriorated to the point where citizens now take instructions from armed groups rather than lawful authorities, warning that no nation can make meaningful progress under persistent fear and insecurity.

He described the situation as more than a security challenge, calling it a national emergency that requires urgent and decisive action from government at all levels.
“The primary responsibility of any government is the protection of lives and property. Nigerians deserve to live in peace, not at the mercy of terror,” he added.
Obi’s remarks come amid growing national concern over insecurity, particularly in northern Nigeria, where communities have faced repeated attacks, displacement, and threats from armed groups.
He concluded by reiterating his call for a safer and more accountable nation, stressing that Nigeria must urgently reclaim its authority and restore public confidence in governance.
