Shettima Arrives Lagos To Update Tinubu On Maiduguri Bombings

Vice President Kashim Shettima is in Lagos to present his findings on the security situation in Maiduguri to President Bola Tinubu, days after visiting the city following last week’s suicide attacks.

The vice president travelled to Borno State on the president’s instructions to meet with victims and communities impacted by the bombings that claimed at least 23 lives and wounded more than 100 people.

Shettima disclosed his Lagos visit in a post on his official X account on Sunday, March 22.

“The Vice President will brief the President on the outcome of his visit to Maiduguri to see families and communities affected by the tragic incidents in Borno State, as well as his on-the-spot assessment of the situation on the ground,” the post stated.

“Thereafter, Vice President @KashimSM is expected to lead serving governors on Sallah homage to the President.”

The bombings took place on Monday evening around 7:02 p.m.

Suicide bombers targeted three locations in quick succession, Maiduguri Monday Market, the Post Office Flyover area, and the entrance of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.

According to police reports, 23 people died while 108 others sustained injuries of varying severity.

Shettima visited the teaching hospital on Wednesday to see victims receiving treatment. While there, he condemned the attacks in strong terms.

“We will not rest on our laurels until full peace and sanity is restored in Borno, the Northeast, and the nation as a whole,” he said.

He called the bombings “barbaric” and maintained that no cause, religious or otherwise, could justify taking innocent lives.

The vice president promised that the federal government would provide support to victims and their families through the National Emergency Management Agency, the North East Development Commission, and the Borno State Government.

He further pledged that perpetrators of the attacks would be “decisively confronted.”
