Nasarawa State is set to launch an urgent four-day polio immunisation campaign on Saturday, March 28, 2026, targeting more than one million children under five across all 13 local government areas, as health authorities intensify efforts to prevent a resurgence of the highly infectious virus.
The drive, organised by the Nasarawa State Primary Healthcare Development Agency in partnership with UNICEF, was officially announced on Thursday, March 26, 2026, during a media dialogue in Lafia, the state capital.
Dr Bosede Ezekwe, Dr Bosede Ezekwe and State Coordinator for the World Health Organisation, outlined strategies for the campaign and stressed the importance of reaching every eligible child.
The dialogue convened journalists, health experts, and key stakeholders to assess the current polio situation, review campaign logistics, and emphasize the media’s role in disseminating accurate public health information.

Authorities reiterated that the oral polio vaccine is safe, highly effective, and critical for protecting children from the virus, which can cause paralysis or, in severe cases, death.
Parents and caregivers were urged to ensure their children participate in the drive.
Vaccination teams will use house-to-house visits, fixed posts at health facilities, and transit-point coverage to reach children in urban centers and hard-to-reach communities alike.
The campaign forms part of nationwide efforts to close immunity gaps and sustain Nigeria’s polio-free status, maintaining vigilance against any potential resurgence of the disease.
