Concerns over the safety of compressed natural gas, CNG, vehicles have intensified following an explosion involving a luxury bus at the Lagos Garage Terminus in the Mando area of Kaduna State.
The blast, which occurred early morning on Sunday, April 5, without warning, left the bus extensively damaged and debris strewn across the busy transport hub, disrupting activities and drawing crowds of shocked onlookers.
Eyewitnesses said the explosion sent panic through commuters, traders, and residents in the area, as emergency responders quickly moved in to secure the scene.
Remarkably, no casualties were recorded, despite the severity of the damage, a development that many described as fortunate given the scale of the incident.

Although authorities are yet to establish the exact cause of the explosion, the incident has renewed scrutiny of CNG-powered vehicles, especially as their adoption continues to grow in Nigeria’s public transportation system.
Industry observers have pointed to potential concerns around maintenance standards, fuel system reliability, and regulatory compliance, all of which are expected to form part of investigations by relevant safety agencies.
The outcome of the probe is likely to shape ongoing discussions about the viability and safety framework guiding the use of alternative fuel vehicles across the country.
