EFCC Arrests Woman In Maiduguri Over Alleged Naira Mutilation

The Maiduguri Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested a woman identified as Fatima Muhammed over an alleged case of Naira mutilation.

The commission disclosed the arrest in a statement shared via its official X handle on Wednesday.

According to the EFCC, the suspect was apprehended on Tuesday, April 7, 2025, following the circulation of a viral video on TikTok in which she was allegedly seen using a ₦500 note to clean mucus from her nose.

The agency stated that the video prompted immediate action, leading operatives to trace and arrest her within the Maiduguri metropolis.

“The suspect was arrested following a viral video circulated on TikTok where she was seen cleaning mucus from her nose using ₦500 note,” the statement read.

The EFCC added that the suspect is currently in custody at its Maiduguri facility, where she is undergoing investigation.

She is expected to be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

The commission reiterated its commitment to enforcing laws against abuse and mutilation of the Naira, warning that acts deemed disrespectful to the national currency would continue to attract legal consequences.

The case adds to a growing list of currency-related offences being investigated by the anti-graft agency, particularly those amplified through social media platforms.
