Shehu Sani Criticises Opposition Silence On Loans, Insecurity, INEC Leadership

Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has criticised opposition lawmakers in Nigeria’s National Assembly, accusing them of remaining largely silent on critical national issues, including government borrowing, insecurity, and electoral leadership.

In a post shared via his X handle, Sani expressed concern over what he described as the growing passivity of opposition senators, particularly in the face of a proposed $6 billion loan and escalating security challenges across the country.

He also questioned the role of citizens, arguing that many Nigerians who express frustration over governance issues online often fail to hold their elected representatives accountable.

According to Sani, opposition lawmakers have not demonstrated the courage expected of them in addressing key national concerns, including speaking out on insecurity and demanding accountability within the electoral system, particularly at the Independent National Electoral Commission.

“Your opposition Senator doesn’t have the courage to stand up in the chamber and oppose the $6 billion loan… or speak about insecurity… or call for the resignation of the INEC chairman,” he stated.

He further criticised constituents for defending their representatives on social media rather than questioning their performance, noting that public accountability is essential for strengthening democratic governance.

Sani urged Nigerians to redirect their frustrations toward elected officials, insisting that meaningful change can only occur when citizens demand transparency and active representation from their leaders.

His remarks come amid ongoing national debates over fiscal policy, security challenges, and electoral reforms, with growing calls for stronger legislative oversight and accountability across all levels of government.
