OAU Refutes Claims Of Snub Against Obi, Cites Late Notice For Cancelled Lecture

The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has dismissed reports suggesting it embarrassed former presidential candidate Peter Obi over a proposed lecture at the institution.

In a statement issued on Sunday by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, the institution clarified that it was not properly informed about the planned event or the profile of the invited guest until shortly before the scheduled date.

According to the statement, a student group had invited Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, to speak on campus.

However, the university said it only became aware of the invitation on Friday, barely a day before the event was to take place.

Olarewaju explained that engagements involving prominent public figures require adequate notice to allow for proper coordination and planning.

He noted that such preparations typically include security arrangements in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS), to ensure the safety of the guest, students, staff, and the wider public.

The university stated that due to the short notice, it was unable to complete the necessary arrangements and therefore could not approve the use of Oduduwa Hall for the programme.

It stressed that the decision was based strictly on safety concerns, the need for order, and adherence to established institutional procedures, and not out of disrespect to Obi, whom it described as a highly regarded public figure.

The statement further revealed that the Vice Chancellor, Adebayo Simeon Bamire, reiterated the university’s openness to hosting notable personalities, provided that due process is followed.

The institution also called on students, staff, and event organisers to comply with laid-down guidelines when planning activities within the university to avoid similar situations in the future.
