The Center for Health, Ethics, Law and Development has reiterated that Female genital mutilation has no medical benefit and remains a serious violation of human rights, calling for stricter enforcement of laws prohibiting the practice in Nigeria.
In a statement issued on Monday, the organisation condemned recent public remarks perceived as endorsing FGM, warning that such narratives could undermine progress made in combating gender-based violence and harmful traditional practices.
CHELD described FGM as a globally recognised form of violence against women and girls, highlighting its severe health risks, including chronic pain, infections, childbirth complications, and psychological trauma.
“FGM has no medical benefit and remains a violation of fundamental human rights. It exposes women and girls to lifelong physical and psychological harm,” the group stated.
The organisation referenced Nigeria’s legal framework, noting that the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act 2015 criminalises the practice and prescribes penalties for those who perform, assist, or promote it. It added that several states have enacted complementary laws banning FGM.

CHELD warned that attempts to normalise or justify the practice could reverse gains made through years of advocacy, particularly in communities gradually abandoning it.
“Statements that validate FGM can confuse individuals who are unlearning deeply rooted cultural norms,” it said, urging public figures to act responsibly.
The group called on government agencies to intensify enforcement efforts and ensure accountability for offenders, while also encouraging community and religious leaders to deepen public education campaigns.
It further urged media organisations to prioritise accurate, evidence-based reporting and called for sustained collaboration between civil society and policymakers to protect women and girls.
Reaffirming its stance, CHELD stressed that Nigeria must sustain its efforts to eliminate FGM and prevent any rollback in the fight against gender-based violence.
