ADC Supporters Protest At INEC Office In Rivers, Demand Chairman’s Resignation

Thousands of supporters of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Wednesday staged a protest at the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Rivers State, calling for the immediate resignation of the commission’s chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan.

The protesters, who gathered in large numbers on Wednesday, marched to the INEC office chanting slogans and displaying placards with inscriptions such as “Amupitan Must Go” and “Save Our Democracy.”

The demonstration, which drew attention across parts of the state, was reportedly organised to express dissatisfaction with the commission’s handling of issues affecting the party.

Eyewitnesses said the crowd maintained a strong presence around the INEC premises, with security operatives deployed to prevent a breakdown of law and order.

Although the protest remained largely peaceful, tensions were high as demonstrators insisted on immediate action from electoral authorities.

The protesters accused INEC leadership of bias and demanded reforms to ensure transparency and fairness in electoral processes.

As of the time of filing this report, there was no official response from INEC or its chairman, Joash Amupitan, regarding the demands.

The development adds to growing political pressure surrounding the commission, particularly amid ongoing disputes within political parties and concerns over internal democracy.

Observers say how the electoral body responds to the protest could shape public confidence in its neutrality ahead of future political activities.
