The Imo State Police Command has initiated a coordinated search and rescue operation following the abduction of a 17-year-old student of the Federal University of Technology Owerri, identified as Mary Ezinwayi Uzoma.
The victim, a 100-level microbiology undergraduate, was reportedly kidnapped along the FUTO–Ihiagwa Road in Owerri West Local Government Area, sparking concern among students and residents.
In response, the police command said it swiftly mobilised operatives in collaboration with local vigilante groups to the scene, where surrounding bushes and adjoining areas were immediately combed in an intensive search effort.
Police spokesperson, Henry Okoye, disclosed in a statement on Tuesday that the State Commissioner of Police, Audu Garba Bosso, has directed the Anti-Kidnapping Unit to take over the investigation.
According to the statement, the directive is part of proactive measures aimed at ensuring the safe rescue of the student and the prompt arrest of those responsible.
The command also confirmed that security presence has been strengthened across the FUTO axis and neighbouring communities, with increased patrols, surveillance operations, and visible policing already underway.

The police assured students, university authorities, and residents of their commitment to safety, urging them to remain calm, vigilant, and continue their lawful activities.
“The Imo State Police Command remains proactive and resolute in its mandate to prevent crime, protect lives and property,” the statement read.
Authorities further appealed to members of the public with useful information to report to the nearest police station or contact designated emergency lines to aid the ongoing operation.
The incident adds to growing security concerns in parts of the state, particularly around student-populated areas, as efforts intensify to secure the victim’s release.
