Ex-Chelsea Defender Azpilicueta Announces Retirement From Football At Season’s End

César Azpilicueta has confirmed he will bring his professional playing career to an end after the current season, closing a two-decade journey across top European leagues and international football.

The former Spain international made the announcement on Friday through an emotional open letter published on X, where he reflected on his early days in Pamplona and the path that eventually defined his career.

“Today, I want to share with you that this season will be my last as a professional footballer,” he wrote. “After so many years living my dream, I feel it’s time to start a new chapter in my life.”

Although he acknowledged having prepared himself mentally for retirement, Azpilicueta admitted the reality of writing the announcement was still difficult.

“Even though I have been preparing myself for this moment, I found it hard to write this letter,” he said, noting that over “20 seasons” of football had shaped his life and career.

Looking back on his childhood beginnings, he expressed deep appreciation for how far the game had taken him.

“When I first kicked a ball as a child in Pamplona with my schoolmates, I never imagined the amazing journey ahead.”

He also extended gratitude to everyone who played a role in his development over the years, including teammates, coaches, and club staff who supported him both on and off the pitch.

Reflecting on his club career, he highlighted the privilege of representing multiple teams and his country at the highest level.

“Wearing the shirts of CA Osasuna, Olympique Marseille, Chelsea FC, Atlético de Madrid, Sevilla FC, and representing my country at the biggest stages has been a true privilege,” he said. “Every moment has meant so much to me.”

Azpilicueta’s retirement marks the conclusion of a distinguished career built on consistency, leadership, and longevity at the highest level of European football.
