French Police Arrest Over 400 After PSG Title Celebrations Turn Violent

French authorities have condemned widespread violence that broke out during celebrations of Paris Saint-Germain’s UEFA Champions League triumph, with more than 400 people arrested and several police officers injured across the country.

According to officials, 416 individuals were taken into custody nationwide following disturbances that erupted after PSG’s victory over Arsenal in the European final. Of the total arrests, 280 were made in Paris, where thousands of supporters gathered to celebrate the club’s historic success.

The unrest left seven police officers injured and caused significant damage to public and private property, including vehicles, businesses and public facilities.

French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez strongly criticised those responsible for the violence, describing the incidents as unacceptable and unworthy of what should have been a moment of national sporting celebration.

Authorities said security forces were forced to intervene after groups of supporters engaged in acts of vandalism and clashes with police in parts of the capital. Tear gas was deployed in some areas to restore order as tensions escalated.

Videos shared online showed scenes of chaos, with burning vehicles, damaged storefronts and fireworks illuminating the streets as celebrations spiralled out of control.

The disorder has reignited debate over security at major sporting celebrations in France. Far-right politician Marine Le Pen criticised the violence, arguing that football victories should not result in widespread public disorder and fear among residents.

Despite the disturbances, authorities confirmed that official victory events for PSG would proceed as planned. The team was expected to participate in a celebratory parade near the Eiffel Tower before being received by French President Emmanuel Macron.

The latest incidents come amid heightened concerns over crowd control during major football celebrations, particularly following tragic events linked to PSG festivities in previous years.

French security agencies have maintained a strong presence across Paris and other cities as celebrations continue, while officials appeal for calm and responsible conduct from supporters.
