World Environment Day: Nonye Soludo Urges Action Against Climate Change

The wife of the Anambra State Governor, Dr Nonye Soludo, has called on residents to adopt environmentally friendly practices as part of efforts to promote healthier communities and sustainable living.

In a statement issued on Friday to mark World Environment Day, celebrated annually on June 5, the Anambra First Lady stressed that maintaining a healthy environment is essential to achieving a healthy lifestyle.

She urged households, schools, markets and communities across the state to cultivate habits that support environmental cleanliness and protection.

Dr Soludo, who founded the non-governmental organisation Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo, noted that environmental preservation goes beyond beautifying surroundings, emphasizing its role in safeguarding public health, reducing disease risks and securing a better future for coming generations.

She also drew attention to the theme of this year’s World Environment Day, “Now for Climate,” describing it as a reminder of the urgent need to confront climate change and its growing impact across the world.

According to her, the campaign highlights increasing environmental challenges such as extreme temperatures, flooding and drought, while underscoring the immediate actions required to address the global climate crisis.

The First Lady identified responsible waste management, maintaining clean surroundings, planting trees and fostering environmental awareness as practical measures individuals and communities can adopt to contribute to a healthier environment.

She said, “World Environment Day reminds us that healthy living equally begins with a healthy environment.

The air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat, and the communities we live in are all connected to the decisions we make every day.

“A cleaner environment is not just about aesthetics; it is about protecting lives, preventing diseases, and creating a healthier future for us and, most importantly, for our children.

As we commemorate this year’s World Environment Day, I encourage every household, school, market, and community to embrace simple habits that make a lasting difference: proper waste disposal, cleaner surroundings, tree planting, and responsible environmental consciousness.

“Through Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo Initiative, we remain committed to promoting a culture where personal health and environmental hygiene go hand in hand.

“Together, let’s nurture a greener, cleaner, smarter, and healthier Anambra.”
