Akwa Ibom Police Arrest Man Over False Security Threat Post On Social Media

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Akaninyene Udo for allegedly spreading false security information on social media, an act authorities say caused panic among residents of Eket and surrounding communities.

According to a statement issued on Monday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, the suspect, who resides in Akpautong, Esit Eket Local Government Area, operates on social media under the name “AK Philo.”

Police said his arrest followed investigations into a viral post carrying the message, “Eket get ready for us,” which was accompanied by an image of an armed bandit. The post reportedly sparked widespread fear and concern among residents.

The Command expressed concern over the growing trend of individuals using social media platforms to circulate unverified and provocative security-related content capable of creating anxiety and disrupting public peace.

Despite the viral message, the police reassured residents that the security situation across Akwa Ibom remains stable and under control.

“The Command wishes to assure the good people of Akwa Ibom State that there is no cause for alarm. The security situation across the state remains calm, stable and under control, while the police and other security agencies continue to maintain vigilance and deploy proactive measures to safeguard lives and property,” the statement said.

Police disclosed that investigations into the matter have been concluded and that the suspect will soon be arraigned in court.

The Command added that efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend other individuals who may have been involved in spreading the alleged false and inciting content.

The police also warned members of the public against creating, sharing or amplifying unverified security alerts, fake news and other misleading information capable of causing public unrest.

According to the Command, such actions constitute criminal offences and offenders will be tracked, arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

Residents were advised to verify security-related information through official channels and credible sources before sharing it on social media or acting on it.

The Command further urged members of the public to remain calm, law-abiding and continue reporting suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through official emergency lines, reiterating its commitment to maintaining peace, security and stability across the state.
