IGP Disu Orders Nationwide Raid On Vehicles Without Number Plates

Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has ordered an immediate nationwide crackdown on vehicles operating without registration numbers or with concealed, defaced, or tampered number plates.

The directive was issued on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, during a strategic conference with senior police officers, where the police leadership expressed concern over what it described as a growing trend of non-compliance with vehicle registration laws across Nigeria.

Disu described the practice as unlawful, unacceptable, and a threat to public safety and national security, warning that it would no longer be tolerated.

He stressed that every vehicle on Nigerian roads must be duly registered and must display approved registration numbers in line with existing legal requirements.

The Inspector-General directed Commissioners of Police, tactical commanders, and heads of formations nationwide to immediately intensify enforcement operations targeting violators.

He further instructed that any vehicle found operating without valid registration or with concealed, defaced, or tampered plates should be stopped and subjected to appropriate legal procedures.

Disu said the Nigeria Police Force would sustain strict enforcement of vehicle registration laws, noting that the abuse of number plates has been linked to criminal activities that undermine security efforts.
