PDP Suffers Fresh Blow As Bauchi Rep Aliyu Misau Defects To APM

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has suffered another setback in the House of Representatives following the defection of a lawmaker representing Misau/Dambam Federal Constituency of Bauchi State, Aliyu Misau, to the Allied Peoples Movement (APM).

Misau formally announced his departure from the opposition party in a letter addressed to Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, which was read during plenary on Wednesday.

The lawmaker attributed his decision to the lingering leadership crisis within the PDP, saying the internal turmoil had made it difficult for him to effectively represent his constituents and contribute meaningfully to their development.

“I would like to thank the PDP for the opportunity given to me to serve the good people of Misau/Dambam Federal Constituency. The leadership crisis in the PDP has made it impossible for me to continue to represent my people and contribute to the development of the constituency,” the letter stated.

Misau’s exit comes just days after four other members of the Bauchi State caucus in the House of Representatives also dumped the PDP for the APM, further weakening the party’s position in the state and at the national level.

The latest defection is widely linked to the recent political realignment in Bauchi State following Governor Bala Mohammed’s decision to leave the PDP and join the APM.m

Since the governor’s move, several elected officials, political appointees and party loyalists have either defected to the APM or indicated plans to follow suit.

Political analysts had anticipated that lawmakers aligned with the governor would eventually make the switch, citing his significant influence over the state’s political structure and growing uncertainty surrounding the PDP’s future.

The development represents another challenge for the PDP, which has been battling prolonged internal disputes over leadership, party structures and strategic direction ahead of future elections.

The crisis has triggered a series of defections across different levels of government, raising concerns among party stakeholders about the PDP’s ability to maintain unity and competitiveness in the evolving political landscape.

With Misau’s defection, the APM continues to consolidate its influence in Bauchi State, strengthening its ranks with the addition of prominent political figures and elected representatives formerly aligned with the PDP.

The move also further reduces the PDP’s numerical strength in the House of Representatives, highlighting the growing impact of ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
