Osi Balogun Of Ibadanland, Oba Olubunmi Isioye-Dada, Dies After Brief Illness

The Osi Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba Olubunmi Isioye-Dada, has passed away, marking the end of a significant chapter in the traditional leadership structure of the ancient city.

A palace source confirmed the monarch’s death on Friday, disclosing that Oba Isioye-Dada died at his Ibadan residence after a brief illness.

According to the source, members of the Omo Oye had already mobilised to the late chief’s residence following news of his passing.

Until his death, Oba Isioye-Dada held the revered title of Osi Balogun of Ibadanland, one of the most influential positions within the renowned Ibadan traditional chieftaincy system.

His passing is expected to trigger a fresh round of promotions within the Balogun line of the Ibadan succession hierarchy, in line with the age-long traditional arrangement governing the ascent of chiefs in the city.

Among those expected to benefit from the anticipated reshuffle is former Oyo State governorship aspirant and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Sharafadeen Ali.

Subject to the approval of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, Senator Ali is expected to move from the position of Ekaarun Balogun to Ekerin Balogun of Ibadanland.

Similarly, Oba Akeem Mobolaji Adewoyin is expected to advance from Ekerin Balogun to Asipa Balogun of Ibadanland as the succession process progresses.

The Ibadan traditional system is widely regarded as one of the most structured succession arrangements in Nigeria, with chiefs rising through established ranks until they become eligible for the Olubadan throne.

The death of Oba Isioye-Dada is expected to be officially announced through traditional channels, while arrangements for his burial and other rites are anticipated to be communicated by the family and palace authorities in due course.

His passing has been described by associates and members of the Ibadan traditional institution as a significant loss to the city, given his contributions to the preservation of culture, tradition and community development during his time as Osi Balogun of Ibadanland.
