Delta Police Deploy Massive Security Personnel For Democracy Day Celebration

The Delta State Police Command has announced the massive deployment of personnel and operational assets across the state as part of efforts to ensure a peaceful and secure Democracy Day celebration.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, ordered the security operation to safeguard lives and property, maintain public order and prevent any breach of peace during the nationwide observance of Democracy Day.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Friday by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Delta State Command, SP Bright Edafe.

According to the statement, the security arrangement includes the deployment of conventional police personnel, tactical teams, intelligence operatives and undercover officers to strategic locations across the state.

The command said officers have been stationed at critical infrastructure, recreational centres, places of worship, major highways and other public spaces to strengthen security and reassure residents.

Edafe also disclosed that Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers and Tactical Commanders have been directed to intensify visibility policing, intelligence gathering and confidence-building patrols within their respective jurisdictions.

“The Commissioner of Police assured residents of the State of adequate security before, during and after the 2026 Democracy Day celebration,” the statement said.

The police chief urged residents to celebrate responsibly, remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious persons, movements or activities to the nearest police station or other security agencies.

He further appealed to members of the public to cooperate with security personnel deployed across the state and to remain law-abiding throughout the festivities.

While wishing residents and visitors a peaceful Democracy Day celebration, Oyeniyi reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property across Delta State.

He also warned criminal elements against attempting to take advantage of the celebrations to perpetrate crime, stressing that the command remains fully prepared to deal decisively with any threat to public peace and security.

The heightened security measures come amid increased security concerns in parts of the country and ongoing Democracy Day activities commemorating Nigeria’s 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance.

Democracy Day is observed annually on June 12 in honour of the country’s democratic journey and the struggle for civil rule. The date was officially adopted in 2018, replacing May 29 as Nigeria’s Democracy Day.
