Ghana have been dealt a major setback ahead of their opening match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after midfielder Thomas Partey was denied entry into Canada and ruled out of the team’s Group stage encounter against Panama.
The experienced midfielder, who currently plays for Spanish side Villarreal, was expected to join the Black Stars in Toronto from their training base in Boston.
However, Canadian authorities reportedly rejected his visa application, preventing him from traveling with the squad for the fixture.
FIFA confirmed the development on Friday, June 12, 2026, stressing that immigration decisions remain the responsibility of host nations and fall outside the governing body’s authority.
“FIFA is not involved in the immigration processes of host countries, including the adjudication of visas,” the world football body said in a statement.

“The host government ultimately determines who receives a visa and is admitted into the country.”
Partey’s absence is expected to significantly impact Ghana’s preparations, given his experience and key role in the team’s midfield.
The 32-year-old has remained a central figure for the Black Stars and was expected to play a crucial role as Ghana seek a positive start to their World Cup campaign.
The development comes amid ongoing legal proceedings involving the player. Partey has pleaded not guilty to seven counts of rape and one count of sexual assault linked to allegations made by four women between 2020 and 2022. He is scheduled to stand trial next year.
With their midfield plans disrupted, Ghana’s coaching staff are now expected to make last-minute adjustments ahead of the crucial clash against Panama.
The Black Stars will be hoping to overcome the setback and begin their World Cup journey on a positive note despite the absence of one of their most experienced players.
