Nigerian inmates at AbaSamuel Prison in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, have welcomed a newly signed Prisoner Transfer Agreement between Nigeria and Ethiopia, saying it offers renewed hope of completing their sentences in Nigeria.
The agreement, facilitated by the Federal Government through the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Ojukwu, creates a formal framework for eligible Nigerian convicts in Addis Ababa to be transferred back to Nigeria to serve the remainder of their custodial terms.
Following the announcement, inmates were said to have expressed joy and relief, while thanking President Bola Tinubu and the Federal Government for what they described as increased attention to their welfare abroad.

In a post on X on Saturday, June 13, 2026, Ojukwu said the prison atmosphere was filled with excitement, noting that the Nigerian inmates reacted emotionally to the development and the prospect of repatriation.
She described the agreement as a significant milestone in bilateral cooperation and said it reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to citizens’ welfare under the “Renewed Hope” agenda.
The arrangement is expected to guide the transfer of sentenced persons between both countries once eligibility requirements are satisfied.
