US Mission Warns Nigerians Against Visa Overstays, Immigration Violations

The United States Mission in Nigeria has advised Nigerian travellers to strictly observe American immigration regulations, warning that violations could affect future opportunities to enter the country.

In a message shared on its official X account on Tuesday, June 23, the mission urged Nigerians travelling to the United States for education, employment, or tourism to comply with the conditions attached to their visas and avoid overstaying their authorised period of stay.

According to the mission, adherence to immigration rules remains essential for maintaining access to future travel and study opportunities in the United States.

“Staying compliant with U.S. immigration laws isn’t just the right thing to do; it protects your future and keeps opportunities open for Nigerian travelers,” the post read.

The advisory comes amid continued efforts by US authorities to reduce visa overstays and strengthen compliance with immigration regulations.

The mission encouraged travellers to ensure their immigration documents remain valid and up to date throughout their stay.

“Whether you’re studying, working, or visiting the United States, always honour the terms of your visa. Follow the rules. Stay only for as long as you are authorized. Keep your documents updated. Make choices that safeguard your dreams,” the mission said.

It added that respecting visa conditions benefits both travellers and the broader relationship between Nigeria and the United States, “when you respect the process, everyone wins.”

The mission explained that such measures are intended to preserve the integrity of the US visa system and ensure that legitimate travellers continue to have access to opportunities in the country.

It also reminded prospective visitors that compliance with immigration laws remains an important factor in future visa applications and travel eligibility.
