The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has ordered personnel of the Nigeria Police Force to stop engaging in unauthorised social media activities, including live streaming, video production and other forms of online content creation that could damage the image of the Force.
The directive comes amid growing concerns over the activities of some serving officers who appear in online videos and broadcasts while in uniform or in situations where they are easily identified as police personnel without obtaining official approval.
The order was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday, June 23, by the Force Public Relations Officer, Anietie Okokon Iniedu.
According to the statement, the police chief acknowledged the importance of social media as a communication tool but emphasised that officers must use such platforms in line with existing regulations and the Nigeria Police Force Social Media Policy.
The IGP warned that police personnel are not permitted to create or distribute content that has not been officially authorised, especially when dressed in police uniforms or discussing matters related to the Force.
“He noted that officers are prohibited from creating or sharing unauthorised content in police uniform, commenting publicly on official police matters, disclosing sensitive operational information, or using their status as police officers for personal promotion, entertainment, or commercial gain.”

To ensure compliance, the police chief directed Commissioners of Police, department heads and other senior officers to educate personnel under their supervision and ensure strict observance of the directive.
He also made it clear that commanding officers would be held responsible if violations occur within their commands and no action is taken.
“Supervisory officers will be held accountable for failure to take appropriate action against violations within their areas of responsibility.”
The statement further disclosed that the Force Intelligence Department and the X-Squad under the Professional Standards Department have been directed to increase surveillance of social media platforms to identify officers whose online activities fall short of professional expectations.
The police leadership said the measure is part of broader efforts to strengthen discipline within the Force, promote professionalism and ensure that public communication by officers aligns with institutional standards.
The Force maintained that responsible use of social media remains essential to preserving public confidence and protecting the integrity of the Nigeria Police Force.
