Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has assured residents that his administration is implementing long-term measures to address waste disposal challenges across the state, saying new infrastructure and equipment are being deployed to improve environmental sanitation.
The governor gave the assurance on Saturday after personally inspecting the monthly environmental sanitation exercise in Surulere, where he commended residents for joining officials of the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources in clearing drainage channels and cleaning their surroundings.
According to Sanwo-Olu, the level of participation by residents demonstrated a growing commitment to environmental responsibility and community development.
“Seeing residents working side by side with the Ministry of Environment teams to clear the drains and sweep the streets was very encouraging,” he said.
He stressed that maintaining a clean environment remains a shared responsibility, noting that proper sanitation is essential to protecting public health and reducing the risk of flooding.
“We must always remember that keeping Lagos clean is a shared responsibility that directly protects our health and prevents flooding,” the governor stated.
Acknowledging public concerns over recent waste disposal challenges in parts of the state, Sanwo-Olu said his administration was taking decisive steps to permanently resolve the situation.
“I know many of you are frustrated with current waste disposal issues, and I want to assure you that we are tackling this head-on,” he said.

The governor disclosed that the state government would soon introduce 150 new compactor trucks to strengthen waste collection across Lagos.
He also revealed plans to deploy locally assembled tricycles to improve refuse collection in inner streets and hard-to-reach communities where larger trucks face accessibility challenges.
In addition, Sanwo-Olu said the government is constructing waste processing facilities capable of handling thousands of tonnes of refuse daily as part of efforts to modernise the state’s waste management system.
“We are bringing in 150 new compactor trucks, deploying locally assembled tricycles for inner streets, and building facilities that will process thousands of tonnes of waste daily,” he said.
He further disclosed that the state government is providing support to Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators to help them overcome operational challenges affecting waste collection services.
“We are also actively supporting our PSP operators to overcome their current operational challenges,” he added.
Sanwo-Olu thanked residents who participated in the sanitation exercise and urged Lagosians to sustain the culture of environmental cleanliness, stressing that government efforts alone would not be enough to keep the state clean.
“Thank you to everyone who rolled up their sleeves to join us today. We are putting the right infrastructure in place, but we need your daily dedication to keep our neighbourhoods safe and clean.
“Our collective effort is what truly keeps Lagos moving forward,” the governor said.
