Senate Backs Customs Revenue Plan Amid Global Trade Shocks

The Senate Committee on Customs on Monday, July 6, 2026, expressed confidence in the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) to meet its 2026 revenue target after a budget defense session in Abuja.

Chairman of the committee, Senator Isah Jibril, said the Service has maintained strong performance despite persistent global economic pressures affecting trade and government revenue expectations.

The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi, told lawmakers that the agency remains optimistic about achieving its revenue goals even amid disruptions in international supply chains.

He disclosed that the Service has generated ₦4.43 trillion so far, noting that the figure is below earlier projections for the period under review.

Adeniyi linked the shortfall to external shocks in global trade, including instability in key maritime routes and reduced cargo volumes at Nigerian ports.

He cited the Middle East crisis as a major factor disrupting shipping schedules, alongside the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which continues to strain global logistics.

Despite these challenges, he said the Service met its approved 2025 revenue target of ₦6.584 trillion.

Lawmakers, after the briefing, commended the agency’s performance and expressed confidence in its capacity to deliver on the 2026 revenue projection.
