Zelensky Proposes New Prime Minister In Sweeping Government Reshuffle

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has proposed replacing Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko in a sweeping government reshuffle aimed at advancing what he described as an updated political strategy.

Announcing the move on Sunday, July 12, 2026, Zelensky praised Svyrydenko, who has served as prime minister since July 17, 2025, and said he had offered her a new senior role overseeing relations with one of Ukraine’s key international partners. He did not disclose the position or identify her successor.

The president said he expects parliament to approve the changes, adding that the overhaul will also affect the leadership of the country’s law enforcement agencies.

Opposition lawmaker Yaroslav Zhelezniak said Svyrydenko is likely to be appointed Ukraine’s ambassador to the United States.

Under Ukrainian law, the resignation of a prime minister requires parliamentary approval and automatically results in the resignation of the entire cabinet.

Although no successor has been formally nominated, those widely tipped for the role include Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal, Digital Transformation Minister Mykhailo Fedorov and Naftogaz chief executive Serhiy Koretskyi.

If approved, the reshuffle would mark the first change in Ukraine’s premiership since Svyrydenko took office in 2025, as Kyiv continues to strengthen its wartime administration.
