Falz Says Anti-Governance Advocacy Targets Bad Leadership, Not Politicians

Nigerian rapper and actor, Folarin Falana, popularly known as Falz, has maintained that his advocacy against bad governance is not directed at any individual politician or political party but focuses solely on the country’s leadership failures and governance practices.

The award-winning entertainer made the clarification during an interview on Arise 360, while responding to questions about whether his outspoken stance on national issues had cost him business opportunities and brand partnerships.

Falz disclosed that a potential corporate partnership was withdrawn after concerns were raised over what was described as his political activism.

According to him, representatives of the organisation communicated their reservations to his management, citing his frequent commentary on governance and political issues.

Despite the setback, the singer said he had no regrets about speaking out, insisting that his position has always been guided by the desire to address societal problems rather than target individuals.

“The way I look at that is it was never meant for me. If you feel in any way attacked or feel like what I’m doing is in any way directed at you, then maybe I don’t even want to be there. Maybe I shouldn’t even be there because what I’m saying is the truth,” he said.

Falz stressed that his criticism is aimed at governance practices and the conditions affecting Nigerians rather than personalities or political organisations.

“I’m not single-handedly picking at anyone to antagonise. What I’m speaking to is the practice and not even really the people in particular. I’ve mentioned no name, I’ve mentioned no political party or whatever,” he stated.

The rapper explained that he has consistently avoided partisan politics, choosing instead to highlight issues such as poor governance, insecurity, economic hardship and the welfare of ordinary Nigerians.

He argued that anyone who interprets his advocacy as a personal attack may be identifying with the very problems he seeks to expose.

“If you have a problem with them, then you are the problem,” Falz added.

Falz has, over the years, emerged as one of Nigeria’s most vocal entertainers on governance and social justice issues.

He was a prominent voice during the #EndSARS protests and has repeatedly used his music and public platforms to call for accountability, improved governance and respect for citizens’ rights.
