Senate Approves FRSC Act Amendment, Raises Penalties For Motorists

The Senate has approved amendments to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Act, 2026, introducing stiffer penalties for traffic violations to strengthen road safety enforcement across Nigeria.

Passed on Thursday, July 16, 2026, the amended law imposes a ₦100,000 fine on motorists convicted of disobeying traffic lights, road signs, pavement rules or road markings.

It also introduces a ₦50,000 penalty for hawking, trading or preaching inside commercial buses, while the fine for driving under the influence of alcohol or intoxicating substances rises from ₦5,000 to ₦100,000. Offenders may also face up to two years’ imprisonment or both sanctions.

Motorists who refuse roadside breath tests conducted by FRSC officials on reasonable suspicion will risk a ₦50,000 fine, six months’ imprisonment, or both.

The revised legislation further raises the penalty for speeding from ₦5,000 to ₦100,000 and prescribes the same fine for reckless driving, with a possible two-year jail term or both.

The Senate said the amendment is aimed at improving compliance with traffic regulations, enhancing FRSC’s enforcement capacity and reducing road crashes.

The bill will now proceed for presidential assent before becoming law.
