The Nigerian Army has raised the alarm over an attempted cyber breach of its official X (formerly Twitter) account, urging members of the public and the media to disregard suspicious or unauthorised posts from the platform.
The Army said the attempted unauthorised access occurred at about 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 29, 2026, and is being treated as a cybersecurity incident.
In a statement signed on Saturday by the Acting Director Army Public Relations, Col. Appolonia Anele, the military said immediate technical and protective measures had been activated to secure the account and prevent further unauthorised access.
According to the Army, efforts are also underway to restore exclusive administrative control of the affected account and protect the integrity of information disseminated through the platform.
The military cautioned members of the public against relying on any suspicious, misleading or unverified content published through the compromised account, stressing that such materials should not be regarded as representing the official position of the Nigerian Army.
“The Nigerian Army assures members of the public, the media and other stakeholders that appropriate measures are underway to fully secure the affected account and restore exclusive administrative control,” the statement said.
The Army further urged journalists, media organisations and members of the public to verify information through its other official communication platforms while the incident is being resolved.
The military said the incident underscores the importance of protecting information systems against cyber threats, particularly as social media platforms remain critical channels for official communication and public information.
The Nigerian Army reaffirmed its commitment to information integrity, operational security and responsible strategic communication, adding that further updates would be issued as developments arise.
The public was advised to rely on the Army’s verified Facebook, Instagram and YouTube platforms, as well as the Nigerian ArmyInfo X account, for official information pending the full resolution of the cybersecurity incident.
