Magistrate collapses during protest at Cross River Govt House

A magistrate, Richard Bassey, on Tuesday, collapsed at the gate of the Governor’s office on while participating in a protest along with other magistrates over unpaid 24 months salaries.

But Bassey was revived by the other magistrates and rushed to a hospital.

During the Tuesday ‘Day Two’ of the magistrates’ protest unlike on Monday, the protesting magistrates, who carried various placards, were fully dressed in their regalia.

Solomon Abuo, who spoke on behalf of the protesting magistrates, said none of the state government officials had addressed them since they embarked on their action.

Abuo accused the government of neglecting them in the past two years.

“As I speak, we are still working. We will continue to protest until we are paid. This is our last resort,” he said.

While the commotion over the collapse of the magistrate was ongoing, the state Deputy Governor, Prof Ivara Esu, drove past the protesters without stopping.

As of the time of filing this report, the government had yet to respond to the magistrates.
