The Rivers State Police Command has dismissed three officers over the killing of 22-year-old University of Port Harcourt graduate, Anthony Obodo, in Port Harcourt.
The command also declared an Inspector who fled after the shooting a deserter.
Commissioner of Police Olugbenga Adepoju announced the action on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, saying investigations had established the officers’ culpability. The three dismissed personnel will be charged to court.
Obodo was fatally shot on Thursday, August 27, during an encounter with police personnel around the Ada George-Agip Junction area of Port Harcourt.
The command had earlier detained Corporal Alfred Louis, identified as the officer allegedly involved, alongside other members of the team at the State Criminal Investigation Department.

Police said an altercation preceded the shooting. Two passers-by were also injured.
Obodo’s death sparked protests by his relatives, friends and other residents, who demanded justice and accountability.
The case follows similar action by the Nigeria Police Force in Delta State in April after 28-year-old Mene Ogidi was killed during an encounter with officers in Effurun.
Following an investigation, officers found culpable in Ogidi’s death were dismissed and referred for prosecution.
In Rivers, the three officers will now face criminal proceedings, while the fleeing Inspector has been declared a deserter.
