The House of Representatives has dismissed allegations that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, obtained loans without the approval of the National Assembly.
The clarification was issued on Thursday, September 10, by the Deputy Spokesperson of the House, Philip Agbese, who said there was no evidence to support the allegation.
The controversy followed claims by Senator Ireti Kingibe that the FCT Administration had accumulated debts without obtaining the required legislative approval.
Kingibe said she had raised the matter with the Senate leadership after reviewing information obtained from the Debt Management Office (DMO) covering the period between August 2023 and March 2026.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, the senator questioned whether Wike had approached the Senate to obtain approval for any borrowing.

“I have never seen Wike come to the National Assembly and before the Senate to ask for approval of anything,” Kingibe had said.
However, Agbese rejected the allegation, insisting that the FCT minister had not violated the law in relation to borrowing.
According to the lawmaker, there was no basis for claims that Wike had secured loans without the knowledge or approval of the National Assembly.
“Wike has committed no infraction in borrowings. There is no basis for the allegation that he has been borrowing money behind the back of the National Assembly,” he said.
The House’s position effectively counters the allegation that the FCT Administration accumulated loans outside the constitutional and legislative framework governing public borrowing.
