The Kaduna State University chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities has suspended its strike after the Kaduna State Government approved the implementation and domestication of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement for the institution’s academic staff.
The suspension takes effect from 12:01 am on Friday, September 18, 2026, following the union’s congress decision to accept resolutions reached by the state government, the university’s Governing Council and management.
The development is expected to clear the way for the resumption of academic activities at KASU, where lecturers had embarked on industrial action over the implementation of new conditions of service and other provisions contained in the 2025 FGN-ASUU agreement.
The branch Chairman, Abubakar Abdullahi, and Secretary, Silas Bakut, announced the decision in a statement issued after the union’s congress meeting at the university auditorium on Thursday.
The union said Governor Uba Sani had approved the implementation and domestication of the agreement for KASU academic staff from October 2026.
It also disclosed that the university’s Governing Council and management had approved the payment of nine months’ accumulated arrears covering January to September 2026.
“We are pleased to inform all stakeholders that the Visitor and Executive Governor of Kaduna State has approved the implementation and domestication of the 2025 FGN/ASUU Agreement for Academic Staff of Kaduna State University (KASU), commencing from October 2026.
Furthermore, the University Governing Council and management have approved the commencement of payment of the accrued nine-month arrears, covering the period from January to September 2026,” the statement said.
ASUU described the approvals as “significant and commendable steps” towards restoring stability and industrial harmony at the university, adding that the measures would strengthen staff welfare, retention and productivity.
The union said its congress subsequently reviewed the approvals and unanimously agreed to suspend the strike.

Based on the conditions mentioned above, the Congress resolved to suspend the ongoing strike action in the branch, effective 12.01 am, 18th September, 2026,” the union said, while commending the state government, Governing Council and university management for their contributions towards resolving the dispute.
It specifically praised the government’s negotiation team for its “dedication, commitment, and prompt attention” to the issues raised by the lecturers.
The union also acknowledged the university management’s role in supplying documents, information and other assistance to the government negotiation team and ASUU throughout the discussions.
ASUU noted that the dispute was resolved without threats or intimidation against its members, describing the approach as a departure from what it said had occurred in previous disputes.
“It is worthy of note that neither the union nor its members were subjected to threats or intimidation by the government or the university management during the dispute. This represents a significant departure from experiences in the past,” the union stated.
According to the lecturers, the government also allowed the union to follow its established internal processes when starting and suspending the strike, which it said demonstrated “respect for due process, constructive engagement and industrial relations.”
The union urged students to prepare for the return of academic activities.
“To our dear students, we look forward to welcoming you back to the classrooms as soon as possible,” it said.
The KASU-ASUU chapter had commenced a two-week warning strike on August 28, 2026, over unresolved issues relating to salaries, earned allowances, university autonomy and promotion arrears.
At the time, the union maintained that the Kaduna State Government’s approval of N300 million for the payment of Earned Academic Allowance to academic staff did not resolve all its outstanding demands.
