The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has urged Nigerians living abroad to channel their expertise, investments and global networks into Nigeria’s development.
She made the call on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, at a town hall meeting with Nigerians in the Diaspora in New York, held on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly.
Vice President Kashim Shettima attended the meeting while representing President Bola Tinubu and leading Nigeria’s delegation to the UNGA, whose General Debate runs from September 22 to 28.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu said Nigerians abroad should be treated as strategic development partners, rather than primarily as sources of remittances.
She identified investment, innovation, knowledge transfer, mentorship and international business links as areas where the Diaspora could make greater contributions.
The minister urged professionals overseas to mentor young Nigerians, support innovation, partner local institutions and connect Nigerian businesses to international markets.

She also reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to Citizens Diplomacy and directed Nigerian embassies, high commissions and consulates to remain accessible and responsive to citizens requiring legitimate consular assistance.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu, however, urged Nigerians abroad to obey the laws of their host countries and conduct themselves in ways that protect Nigeria’s image.
She said the ministry would work with the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, diplomatic missions and other relevant institutions to strengthen engagement with citizens overseas.
The minister noted that Nigeria’s global image was shaped not only by its diplomats but also by the achievements and conduct of Nigerians around the world.
The New York meeting was part of the Federal Government’s broader Diaspora engagement during the UNGA. At a separate meeting with Nigerians in the United States, Shettima also called for greater Diaspora contributions to national development, particularly in education, healthcare, science and technology and agriculture.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu said the government would continue to strengthen consular support and create avenues for Nigerians abroad to contribute to national development.
