Atiku’s Camp Demands Tinubu’s Promised Transport Fare Reduction

The camp of the African Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has called on President Bola Tinubu’s administration to implement its promised reduction in transport fares nationwide.

Atiku’s media aide, Paul Ibe, made the demand in a post on his verified X handle on Thursday, noting that the fare reduction was announced as part of activities to mark Nigeria’s Independence Day.

President Tinubu had previously said Nigerians would begin to benefit from lower transport fares from October 2026.

Reacting to the development, Ibe said, “October 1 is here. But where is Tinubu’s promised transport fare reduction effective today? It was meant to commemorate our Independence Day.

October 1 is here. The question is simple: where is the measurable nationwide reduction?

“However, I am once again reminded that though we may be independent ‘of our colonial masters, we are yet enslaved by bad governance.’”

The ADC candidate’s aide acknowledged that the Tinubu-led All Progressives Congress administration had reported progress in the conversion of vehicles to compressed natural gas and reductions in transport costs on some routes.

However, he argued that the measures had yet to achieve nationwide coverage.

He noted that the government’s CNG programme currently has refuelling infrastructure in 23 states and has described the expansion as a phased process, with coverage of all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory still listed as a future target.
