IPOB Declares APC Boycott, Demands Nnamdi Kanu’s Appeal Hearing

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has declared a political boycott of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing the Federal Government of frustrating efforts to secure a hearing for the appeal of its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

The pro-Biafra group said it would boycott APC rallies and reject the party’s insignia until Kanu’s appeal is listed for hearing, adopting the slogan: “No listing, no participation.”

In a statement issued by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, IPOB accused the government of failing to facilitate the hearing of Kanu’s appeal against the judgment delivered on November 20, 2025.

The group alleged that the appeal remained unlisted and that the Federal Government had yet to file its respondent’s brief, raising concerns over what it described as delays in the judicial process.

IPOB argued that the appeal raised fundamental constitutional questions concerning Kanu’s conviction under a law the group claims had been repealed. It called on the relevant authorities to ensure that the legal issues were heard and determined by the courts without further procedural delays.

The group also expressed concern over what it described as the disappearance of a court file relating to Kanu’s alleged 14-month detention without trial following his discharge by the Court of Appeal on October 13, 2022.

It demanded the restoration of the file, accusing the authorities of obstructing efforts to obtain judicial redress.

Beyond Kanu’s legal case, IPOB accused the Federal Government of applying double standards in its security operations. The group alleged that military operations, arrests and detentions targeting people in the South-East contrasted with the government’s handling of armed groups in other parts of the country.

IPOB also criticised former Ebonyi State Governor and Minister of Works, David Umahi, over his role in the 2017 decision by South-East governors to proscribe the organisation. It alleged that the decision contributed to subsequent security crackdowns in the region.

The group further warned South-East politicians aligned with the APC against what it described as sacrificing the interests of the Igbo people for political benefits.

However, IPOB urged its supporters to carry out the proposed boycott peacefully, cautioning against harassing or threatening people because of their political affiliations.

Reiterating its demands, the group called for Kanu’s immediate and unconditional release, the listing of his appeal for hearing and the restoration of the allegedly missing court file.

The APC and the Federal Government had yet to respond to the allegations in the statement as of the time of filing this report.
